Sophie Bear finished school last week. She is on holiday
today and Mrs Keen has decided that they need a holiday to
relax. Sophie isn't sure where they are going but knows it
is a long way away.
Mrs Keen tells Sophie that they are flying to Spain - it's
a country with some very nice hot beaches. Sophie is excited
- she likes beaches even though she is afraid of water. Spain
is a long way away - how do you think they will get there?
 |
That's right - by aeroplane!
Hang on - who is that in the bag? It's
Chester! He's decided he is coming too and has stowed
away in Mrs Keen's hand luggage.

When they arrive Sophie runs into the hotel room and bounces
on the bed. Then Mrs Keen opens the balcony door and they
go out into the sun and look down. Can you see what Sophie
was looking at from the balcony ...
It is the beautiful blue hotel pool!
| The next day Mrs Keen decides she wants to go out and
see a place called Gibraltar. They have hired a car and
Sophie is sitting in the back. Sophie has to be quiet
though because Mrs Keen isn't used to driving on the right
of the road. |

Gibraltar is part of Great Britain, where she lives,
but it's actually a long way away. Gibraltar is famous
for being a very small place with a large, very high
rock. On the rock live lots of apes. Sophie enjoyed
meeting them - they climb all over the car and watch
you closely. You must not take any food because they
will grab it and run away! Sophie kept her chocolate
tightly in her paws. "They are not having any of
this.".

from the rock ...

On the last day, Sophie Bear wants to go and sunbathe. What
is the first thing you have to do when you are going out in
the sun? To put on suntan lotion!

Then they go for a walk down to the beach...

However, the sea is a bit too rough for Sophie to swim in
so Mrs Keen takes her back to the hotel and they lie by the
pool. Sophie puts her cap on so her head is protected and
lies by the pool in her swimming costume. She's not going
to go in the pool though - she might sink!

It's the last day of the holiday and Sophie is sorry to go
home. She has learnt some new words though. "Hola"
means Hello in Spanish. She has been going around saying "Hola!"
to everyone!

Sophie decided to book a last minute deal with Thomas
Cook. She stayed in Benalmadena at the Hotel Los Patos.
After hiring the car, Sophie drove down the coast
to Gibraltar. Look out for the town "La Linge".
Check with your hire company that you're insured to
drive across the border. If not (and it can be easier
not to), then head for Gibraltar anyway but park along
the main road beside the border. It's pay and display
but quite cheap. You then just walk across the border
with your passports. If you want to do the tour, including
the apes, then Sophie went via Taxi from the border.
It cost £25 each, took a couple of hours but
was a personal guided tour.
